Ask ten people the price of a thousand bricks and you will get ten answers, all of them true on the day they were given. Brick rates change with season, kiln, fuel and distance, so a price list printed in an article is out of date almost immediately. What stays useful is knowing what moves the price and how to judge the brick you are actually buying.
We are not quoting a rate here on purpose. Instead, this guide explains how to compare like with like.
Why brick rates keep changing
Bricks are baked clay, and everything that goes into that process has a price that moves. Fuel for the kiln, labour, the clay itself, and transport to your site all change. Supply also changes with the weather: kilns slow down or stop in the monsoon, and demand from a busy building season pushes rates up.
Types and grades of brick
Locally, bricks are commonly sorted into grades by firing and strength, from well-fired first-class bricks down to weaker, under-fired ones. A first-class brick is uniform in colour and shape, fully fired and strong. A lower grade may be uneven, softer or absorb more water.
Cheaper does not mean better value. A weak brick in a load-bearing wall, or one that absorbs water and carries salts, will cause trouble later. Efflorescence, the white powder on walls, is often traced back to poor bricks, as we explain in our article on the white stuff on brick walls.
How to check brick quality on site
Look at a sample from the delivery, not the top layer of the load. Bricks should be regular in shape and colour. Strike two together: a clear, ringing sound suggests good firing, a dull thud suggests under-fired brick. Break one open and check that it is dense and evenly coloured all the way through. Soak one for a while and see how much water it takes up. A brick that drinks water like a sponge will pull moisture into the wall.
Factors that affect the rate you are quoted
Brick grade, brick size, the kiln it comes from, the distance to your site, the quantity ordered and the season all matter. So does whether the rate includes unloading and stacking. When comparing two suppliers or two contractors, ask for the rate in writing with the date, the grade and what is included.
Size, breakage and waste
Two bricks can be sold at the same rate and still not cost the same on your wall. Size and shape consistency change how much mortar you use and how much material is lost to cutting and breakage. Bricks that arrive chipped or broken are money you pay for and cannot build with, so agree in advance how breakage is counted and who bears it. Uniform bricks also lay faster and give a neater wall, which can lower labour time. When you compare quotes, compare the finished wall and not only the price per thousand, because the cheapest brick is not always the cheapest wall.
